Program Description
Each April rising sophomores (current first year students) and juniors (current second year students) may compete for one of the RA positions available, based on their interests, skills, and background. RAs spend the following academic year developing a relationship with a faculty mentor, gaining research skills (such as evaluating textbooks, doing archival research and transcriptions, performing literature searches and writing summaries, contacting subjects, administering interviews, coding data, running experiments, analyzing data using computer software, implementing computer software, and using and creating online archives and resources) that will allow them to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the participating mentors and that will be useful in future research endeavors. Faculty mentors represent a diverse array of interests across the disciplines.
Each RA receives a stipend of $1000 from the ARC in two installments throughout the year (in December, pending successful progress, and in April, pending successful completion). Students spend a minimum of five hours per week working on the project (they may work more if the student is compensated with credit or is paid additionally by the faculty member), participate in training sessions and workshops relevant to their assignment, and meet with their Aresty Peer Advisors twice monthly basis to discuss their progress and gain exposure to additional research opportunities and conversations at the university. Students keep blogs about their experiences, students write a 250 word abstract about their faculty mentor’s research, and at the end of the spring term compete to participate in the university-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium.
If you have questions about the Aresty RA Program, or about undergraduate research more generally, feel free to contact the Aresty Research Center at 732-932-7027 or aresty@rci.rutgers.edu.

Eligibility Requirements
This program helps rising sophomores and juniors to learn about the process of research early in their academic careers. No previous experience in research is necessary, and there is no minimum GPA; the most important criterion is an interest in research. Other skills and coursework requirements vary from position to position.
Applicants are evaluated by potential mentors and selected on the basis of their academic records, their interest in developing research skills and a mentoring relationship, and compatibility of their interests with faculty projects.
