These are some examples of programs funded by the National Science Foundation. Similar programs are available at other universities and institutes; access the full list by visiting the NSF-REU website.

International REU Site Program in Ghana

James Madison University invites students to participate in its NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May through July 2007. The goal of this program is to expand the educational experience of participants through research in ecology, environmental science, aquatic biology, and conservation biology in tropical sub-Sahara Africa. Seven students and a high school teacher will travel with the Program Director to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana during the summer to work on defined research projects under the mentorship of Ghanaian scientists for eight weeks. Participants will conduct carefully selected projects focusing on ecological and environmental studies in the Cape Coast area such as the Kakum National Forest, one of the few virgin forests in Africa.  Weekly seminars and workshops, led by Ghanaian professors, will provide participants opportunities to learn beyond their disciplines. Field trips to cultural and scientific sites will take place during the weekends. Airfare, room and board will be provided. Participants will receive a stipend at the end of the program. Additional information and applications are available at http://csm.jmu.edu/wubah/ucc/. Deadline for receiving applications is February 16 2007.

REU at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Anthropogenic Impact on the Environment

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is offering a NSF funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates program this summer. The program, which runs from May 29-August 3, 2007, is entitled SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Focus): Anthropogenic Impact on the Environment. Application deadline is March 1, 2007. Students will do research on an independent project and on a cohort project. They will also hone their professional skills, go on field trips (some overnight) and have an Ethics in Science course. More information about the program and online application are available at www.sci.tamucc.edu/surf/ Faculty letters of recommendation can also be done online. Students receive a stipend of $3,500 for the 10 week program, free board, a food subsidy, partial travel reimbursement and a travel subsidy to a scientific meeting.

REU in Physics and Materials Science at Wooster

May 21 - July 27, 2007, $5000 stipend, housing, meal allowance, relocation funds and a Great Research Experience! **DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 16** Our department has excellent research and computing facilities, and our REU summer research projects have resulted in
several student co-authored papers in refereed journals and conference presentations.

During the ten week research period, students will work with individual faculty mentors and learn the tools necessary to become practicing scientists. Students participating in this exciting program will have the opportunity to gain basic research skills, learn analytical and computational techniques, and become proficient in interpretation and presentation of results. Research areas include High Energy Astrophysics, X-ray studies of Compact Objects, Computational Surface Physics, Self-Organized Criticality, Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystals, Branched Polymers, Atomic Force Microscopy, Quantum Dots, Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, and Quantum Mechanical Simulations.

An on-line application form and information on our program, facilities and research projects are available at our Web site: http://www.wooster.edu/Physics/REU/, or by contacting: Dr. John F. Lindner, Department of Physics, The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH 44691, 330-263-2120 (phone), 330-263-2516 (fax), JLindner@Wooster.edu.
