Program Description

Rising sophomores (students in the Class of 2011) selected for this opportunity will spend the summer session, June 2 -August 14, as "Aresty Research Candidates," learning about the process of research in the sciences by working in a research laboratory at Rutgers, gaining research skills that will allow them to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the participating labs and that will be useful in any future research endeavors. Faculty mentors represent a diverse array of interests in the sciences, and each fellow is matched with a faculty mentor whose work is most closely aligned with his or her particular interests, skills, and background. Summer experiences often lead to involvement in research during the subsequent academic year.

Each participant will receive a stipend of $3000 for the duration of the ten week program. Students will be expected to live in a special section of housing in the University Center Apartments on the College Avenue Campus where they will develop a peer community. Students will spend the majority of their time working with their mentor on a "hands on" project in the laboratory, and will also participate in enrichment activities such as weekly meetings with the peer group, library research workshops, seminars, field trips to local research laboratories in industry and medicine, and social events.

The program culminates in a public poster session on Thursday, August 14 from 12:00-2:00pm in the Busch Campus Center International Lounge, where Aresty Research Candidates will each present their research before family, friends and faculty. Click here for photographs of the 2006 event.

Program Scope: The Next Steps

Students who successfully complete the summer experience as Aresty Research Candidates, and who wish to continue in the program, may advance to the Aresty Research Trainee stage in the summer after sophomore year and may become an Aresty Research Scholar in the summer after junior year. At each stage, students will be assisted with finding summer research funding, either through their labs or through external fellowships. Trainees and Scholars will serve as mentors to the Aresty Research Candidates, and will present each summer with the rest of the Aresty program participants.

Requirements

Students must be rising sophomores (Class of 2011). No previous experience in research is necessary, and there is no minimum GPA; the most important criteria is an interest in learning about the process of research. Special consideration may be given to students who are the first in their families to attend college. Applicants must have completed the first science sequence (Biology 101 and 102, Chemistry 161 and 162 or Physics 203 and 204) relevant to their selected opportunity--or received AP credit--by May.
